Melissa Mathews is the founder and president of Spring Green Communications.
Melissa has worked in journalism and communications for more than 25 years, including as a producer at CNN and a public affairs officer and spokesperson at NASA. At Spring Green, she leads a global team advising leaders in business, government and the nonprofit sector on communications strategy. Melissa’s own focus is executive communications and speechwriting. She is passionate about helping clients tell their unique story.
Melissa is also an advocate for flexible work opportunities to enable more parents, diplomatic and military spouses and caregivers to participate fully in professional life. She has presented at industry conferences and been interviewed for print and podcasts on this topic. Her leadership on this issue led to her being named as one of Ragan’s Top Women in Communications in 2022.
A collaborative leader, Melissa is not afraid to make tough decisions or offer candid counsel to colleagues and clients. She builds strong relationships with her team and clients and often serves in a confidante role. As a lifelong learner, she’s currently working to strengthen Spring Green’s growing stakeholder reporting practice as a graduate student in sustainability through Harvard’s extension school. Melissa is married to a U.S. diplomat and has three kids, a Jordanian street cat and a Louisiana-born mutt. She has lived in the U.K., Japan, Guatemala, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Austria.
